Simple Openwork Cap for Summer or Winter
 |
A winter cap and a summer cap. |
For those of us who like to purl, here is a simple and fast summer project. Depending upon the type of yarn used, it can make a summer cap to gather up hair wet from a swim or blown by a sea breeze, or a cap warm and wooly enough to stand up to a cooler season's weather. The pattern is given for worsted weight yarn.
The cap starts with a band of moss or seed stitch, which is both pretty and resistant to curling.
Pattern: Cast on 81 sts using a 4mm circular needle 16" long.
Knit 1, purl 1, for 1 and 1/4" (knitting the purls and purling the knits of the previous rounds).
Set a marker and purl one round. At this point you can set the marker aside until you do the crown, if you wish.
You are now ready to begin the openwork pattern. It consists of nothing more than *YO, purl 2 together* around and around for 5 more inches.

Your basic cap is done!

| The above picture shows the winter cap in Fleece Artist "Marina". It is reversible, with a slight difference in the look of the spiral stitching and crown stitches compared to the summer cap. |
|
| This picture shows the summer cap in Marks & Kattens "Bomull", a 50% cotton, 50% wool blend. It has been sewn around the edge with favourite old glass and shell buttons, and would be lovely with sea shells. Another variation would be to use some of the spiralling openings to weave in a mixture of colourful ribbons to co-ordinate with your beach outfit. |
